It is clear that I am facing a malicious operation.

Former CIA Advisor Henry BarkeyBusinessperson who received aggravated life imprisonment in the Gezi trial Osman KavalaHe announced that he had dinner with journalist Aslı Aydıntaşbaş that evening.

Barkey made a written statement about meeting with businessman Osman Kavala at dinner and being accused of planning a coup.

Barkey stated that they had dinner with journalist Aslı Aydıntaşbaş on July 18, 2016 in Istanbul.I wanted to make a statement about the recent news in the Turkish media. On the evening of July 18, 2016, I went to Karaköy Restaurant to dine alone with my friend, journalist Aslı Aydıntaşbaş. On the same evening, we met the civil society leader Osman Kavala by chance at Karaköy Restaurant. After chatting with her for a few minutes, I sat down to dinner with Aslı Aydıntaşbaş.” said.

In a statement he made in the past few days, Henri Barkey said, “I was having dinner with a well-known Turkish journalist, not with Kavala that night,” and drew attention to the fact that the name of the journalist was not included in the indictment. With the statement he published on his social media account, Barkey described the night he allegedly ‘ate dinner with Kavala’ in the indictment.

“AKP MEDIA TURNED coincidence into a conspiracy”

The statement included the following:

  • I wanted to make a statement about the recent news in the Turkish media. On the evening of July 18, 2016, I went to dine alone with my friend, journalist Aslı Aydıntaşbaş, at Karaköy Restaurant.
  • On the same evening, we met the civil society leader Osman Kavala by chance at Karaköy Restaurant. After chatting with her for a few minutes, I sat down to dinner with Aslı Aydıntaşbaş.
  • As of 2018, AKP media turned this chance encounter with Osman Kavala into a big conspiracy. In October 2020, the prosecution accused Mr. Kavala and me of plotting a coup, with an absurd and fabricated indictment. As of that date, Mr. Kavala was already in prison and this was again a trick used to keep the indictment in detention.
  • It doesn’t change the truth to deny the facts. The fact that even a simple dinner has become such a big topic of discussion is a testament to how sad the situation in Turkey is.

AYDINTAŞBAŞ: AGAINST A MAGNIFICENT OPERATION

After Henri Barkey’s statement, Aslı Aydıntaşbaş also made a written statement.

Aydıntaşbaş said, “In order not to create polemics and with the knowledge of Osman Kavala, about the allegations that have been made about me recently and which I do not doubt are malicious, I have remained silent,” said Aydıntaşbaş.

“IT IS SIGNIFICANT THAT THE PERSON WHO REJECTED THE DEMANDS OF THE LAWYERS SPEAK NOW”

Stating that Barkey rejected the demands of the lawyers, Aydıntaşbaş continued as follows:

  • A person who has not made a statement despite all the insistence for years, and who does not want to share the information requested to eliminate the rumors about him, has started a new polemic with a mysterious timing. It is significant that this person, who until now has refused all kinds of information sharing requests from lawyers in order to refute a series of baseless allegations about Osman, is now speaking.
  • Dear Osman is my friend. Osman Kavala is not in prison for allegedly being in a restaurant at the same time as a US academic. Osman Kavala and his friends were sentenced in the Gezi trial. A second case, namely the espionage case, put forward to keep Osman Kavala in prison, is not based on the thesis that he had dinner with this person. Moreover, Osman Kavala was acquitted of this case.
  • It is not a crime that different people’s paths crossed in the same restaurant in Istanbul days after 15 July. It’s not a secret. The indictment is not based on this either. I regret the baseless allegations made against me, and I invite those who are used to this to mercy.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Former CIA Advisor Henri Barkey made a statement to Sami Menteş from Gerçek Gündem about businessman Osman Kavala, who was tried as part of the Gezi Park case and was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment.

Evaluating the fact that he had dinner with Osman Kavala as evidence of the espionage accusation, Barkey said, “I was having dinner with a well-known Turkish journalist that night, but considering the situation in Turkey, I think it is not right to explain who this person is. That’s why, and frankly, I refuse to be a part of the unfair and fabricated ploy, so far I haven’t disclosed; Of course, he can do it if he wants.”

BARKEY: IT IS INTERESTING THAT THE PERSON I EATED WITH IS NOT WRITTEN IN THE INCLUSION

Stating that they met Kavala at the restaurant, Barkey said, “It is very interesting that even the names of Sylvia and Marwa, who had dinner at another table in the same restaurant that night and attended the conference with me that week, were written in the indictment (obviously, the people who were at the restaurant that night were investigated) and the person I ate at was not specified. situation,” he said.

AYDINTAŞBAŞ: I AM NOT INTERESTED WITH THE EVENT

Speaking to KRT TV after Barkey’s statements, the CHP’s US Representative Yurter Özcan claimed that the journalist who had dinner with Henri Barkey that night was Aslı Aydıntaşbaş.

Aydıntaşbaş, who was asked about the allegations, said, “There is such a claim, but I have nothing to do with this incident.” Answering the question whether he knew Barkey or not, “Everyone knows, he was someone who went to the embassy in Washington, met with officials and ministers”, Aydıntaşbaş said, “I don’t want to give an interview” when asked about whether he had dinner with Barkey.
