Two strains of “Omicron” antagonize vaccine and natural immunity

And the American network, “CNN”, stated that the new data published by a Harvard Health Center show that the vaccine still provides great protection in the face of severe disease, caused by infection with the Corona virus.

The data came as part of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday.

The study said that the levels of neutralizing antibodies (the most effective antibodies) in a person who had a previous infection with corona or received full vaccination decreased several times against the two strains BA.4 and BA.5 compared to those facing the original strain.

“We observed a 3-fold decrease in the levels of antibodies produced by vaccines or infection against BA4 and BA5 compared to BA1 and BA2,” says study lead author Dan Baruch.

He adds that the antibodies against these new strains are much lower than those that encountered the original mutants of the virus.

The virologist concludes that the study data shows that sub-strains of “Omicron” can lead to an increase in infection among those with high levels of immunity to the vaccine in addition to natural immunity.

But Baruch stressed that the vaccines will provide strong protection in the face of severe infections caused by these two strains.

A previous study published by scientists at Columbia University in the United States reached similar results.

The recently published study said that the BA.4 and BA.5 mutant were able to evade antibodies in the blood of fully vaccinated adults, which increases the risk of infection with Corona.
