The chilling event took place last September in Esenyurt, Istanbul. In the indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was stated that there had been disagreements and arguments between the spouses for a while before the day of the incident. In the indictment, it was stated that the defendant Sebahattin Can killed his wife Melike Can by squeezing her throat with her hands as a result of the argument that took place in the couple’s house on the day of the incident. In the indictment, it was demanded that the accused Sebahattin Can be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of “deliberately killing his wife”.
Detained defendant Sebahattin Can was brought to the hearing at Bakırköy 4th High Criminal Court from his prison. The family of the deceased Melike Can and the lawyers of the parties were present at the hearing.
The detained defendant Sebahattin Can, who was promised to make his defense at the hearing, said, “My wife and I got married in 2015. We had a good marriage, but my wife was affected psychologically after a traffic accident. My wife quit her job because she was held responsible for the death of a nurse and a patient. My wife opened a tiktok account with a friend. and removed my pictures from the phone’s screen.”

In the continuation of his defense, the accused Can said that he offered to go to his wife from Istanbul, that he needed money to go to Trabzon and that when he asked his wife for money, he told him that his cards were blocked. The defendant said that there was an abnormality in his wife on the day of the incident and that her husband was trying to force her to eat appetizers. “When Melike said to me later, ‘Your sister will die’, I said, ‘What are you talking about, Melike,’ she said, ‘no, nothing’. She was texting with someone and she called ‘brother’. He was there, he was constantly vilifying me. I said to my wife, “Whatever happens, let’s go to Melike, let’s get out of here, hold my hand, let’s get out of Istanbul”. Melike was calling her older brother on the phone, “come”. She was swearing at her older brother that she was talking about me on the phone. Then I tried to pick up the phone, while we started to fight, the incident happened. He said.

“Do you think your spouse is cheating on you?” In response to the question, the accused Can showed the piece of fabric he took out of his pocket to the court and said, “I saw a piece of boxer in the bedroom and I still have that piece.”
The family of deceased Melike Can stated in their statements that they were complaining about the accused.
Prosecutor Demands Aggravated Life Sentencing
Expressing his opinion on the merits at the hearing, the public prosecutor stated that there had been disagreements and arguments between the deceased Melike Can and the defendant Sebahattin Can, who was officially married, for a while. The prosecutor demanded that the accused be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of “deliberately killing his wife”.

Detained defendant Sebahattin Can said, “I’m sorry, I feel sorry for my children.” The court board, on the other hand, gave time for the defendant and his lawyer to make a statement against the opinion and postponed the hearing to a later date in order to eliminate the deficiencies.
