Former President of Georgia Mihail Saakashvili was detained in the capital Tbilisi on October 1, 2021, one day before the local elections in his country, where he came 9 years later, and was then transferred to Prison No. 12 in Rustavi. Saakashvili was transferred from prison to Viva Med Clinic in the capital Tbilisi during the night, after his health deteriorated and he lost consciousness in the last few days.
MANY CLAUSES AGAINST SAAKASHVILI
In 2007, the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Saakashvili, who was accused of dispersing the opposition’s rally, confiscating the assets of the founder of the television channel Imedi, Badri Patarkachishvili, corruption and abuse of office, and beating a deputy. Tbilisi City Court also sentenced Saakashvili to 3 years in prison in 2018 for abusing his amnesty in a murder case.
Saakashvili left Georgia for the United States in 2013, after his presidential term expired. The President of Ukraine at the time, Petro Poroshenko, granted Saakashvili Ukrainian citizenship in May 2015, Saakashvili was appointed as the Governor of Odessa and resigned from his post in 2016. Saakashvili, who was stripped of his Georgian citizenship on December 4, 2015, took part in the opposition by founding the New Powers Movement Party in Ukraine. Saakashvili, who was also stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship on July 26, 2017, was given citizenship again by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last year. Saakashvili has served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Reform of Ukraine since 2020.
