UEFA approves a fundamental amendment to the Champions League system

Thus, the number of matches that each team will play in the first round will increase to 8 against different competitors (4 at home and 4 away), instead of 6 against 3 competitors (3 home and 3 home) according to the current group system.

It replaces the group stage, which is currently known as one mini-tournament in one group.

“We are confident that the new system provides a real balance,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said.

He continued, “It would develop the balance of competition and provide solid revenues that we can distribute to clubs, leagues and football throughout our continent.”
