An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the Ukraine crisis

Among the countries that launched the invitation based on a letter sent by Ukraine to the United Nations are the United States, France, Britain, Ireland and Albania, according to the same source.

It is up to Russia, which holds the rotating presidency of the council since the beginning of February, to set the date for the meeting officially.

In his letter to his Russian counterpart, Vasily Nebenzia, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United Nations, Sergey Kiseltsya, invoked the Charter of the United Nations and its rules of procedure to demand the presence of a representative of Ukraine at this emergency meeting.

In his letter, seen by AFP, the Ukrainian diplomat also requested that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe participate in the emergency session.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who confirmed her support for an emergency meeting, said in a statement that the Security Council should “demand that Russia respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, which is a member state of the United Nations.”

“Russia’s announcement is nothing but a play, apparently aimed at creating a pretext for a new invasion of Ukraine,” she added.
